In the final session of the 2009 Texas legislature, a Bill calling for reimbursement by Medicare of services rendered relative to CAC and CIMT screening was passed and signed by the Governor. This legislation is effective January 1, 2010. SAIP worked with cardiologists and internists in Texas as well as with the American College of Cardiology in urging passage of the Bill. This is clearly a key win for both modalities. It will give us a base to build upon in other states. The legislation does limit reimbursement to “certified/accredited” providers. We need to seek clarification relative to this part of the legislation.
This legislation may open up an opportunity for SAIP to provide training/education in CIMT. We’ll keep you advised as we proceed with a strategy on this matter.
The one disappointing feature is that the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services [CMS] announced proposed Medicare cuts for all services, including deep cuts in reimbursement for imaging procedures. At this point, those cuts are only “Proposals” from CMS. Congress must still consider the recommendations and make a final decision. ACC is planning an intense grass roots advocacy campaign on this matter and SAIP will participate in these efforts to eliminate the proposed cuts being recommended by CMS. If Congress were to pass legislation approving all CMS reductions in reimbursement for Medicare imaging services as proposed, the trickle down effect would have very serious consequences for all of medicine, not just the Medicare payments.
SAIP will keep its members advised on both the Texas reimbursement issues as well as the proposed cuts in imaging by CMS. We will continue to work closely with the ACC and the leadership of its Coalition of Cardiovascular Organizations [CCO] of which we are a member.
